Quilts come to me in so many different ways. This collection is from a friend's mother who was from St. Louis and she collected quilts and other wonderful objects in her area. It is evident from the cotton quilts presented here that the Collector loved quilts with exceptional quilting techniques.

Christmas Cactus - Price Reduced
This quilt's pattern is Christmas Cactus. 3rd quarter 19th Century. 80.25"x80.25". The quilting is very good! Condition: one small stain less than 1/4 inch in front, binding wear evident, slight color fading in the greens (especially in the binding). Rarity of pattern and overall condition are plusses for this exceptional quilt!

Oak Leaf Variant
Paducah, Kentucky, c. 1860. Made by Mrs. M. E. Poyner. Applique with padded berries. This is perhaps the most relaxed, the folkiest, of the formal applique quilts published in the Kentucky Quilt Project book (1982) and traveled to many museums as part of the Project.
This outstanding quilt is in the American Textile History Museum's new exhibition and accompanying book, Homefront & Battlefield: Quilts & Context in the Civil War (p.159). The exhibition runs through Nov 25 2012 at the ATHM, and then it will travel to the New York Historical Society in Manhattan, the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, and the Nebraska Historical Society in Lincoln.

Abstract Wool and Velvet Crazy Quilt
Missouri, c. 1910, unknown maker. These quilts were made to be used. Rarely did the maker sign his/her name. They were often called «rough» quilts. The makers rarely adhered to the quilt customs of the day when making these quilts. Therefore the design of many of them appears to be freer and to our modern art eye, they look like contemporary art, though it was not likely that was the intention. Without diaries attesting to intent, we can only guess. Wools, good condition. 66" x 79".

Wool Bowties Variation
New Mexico, c. 1900, unknown maker. Another rough quilt made for hard use. These quilts were rarely saved by the family when going through the belongings of a loved one who had passed away. They were considered everyday quilts and not worth saving. They were considered to be far better for the buggy or the horse or the dog bed. Now we love them for their more abstract qualities and only wish we knew more about their makers. Wools, good condition. 69" x 81".

Ohio Amish Pieced (Postage Stamps) Doll Quilt - RARE
Ohio, c. 1930, unknown maker. Little girls around the age of four would learn how to stitch clothes and quilts so their dolls would be comfortable. Some of our antique doll quilts have been sewn by children as a learning tool, while others were made by adults and given to the children as a gift. Pieced wools, good condition. 18.5" x 19.5".

Pennsylvania Amish Bars Doll Quilt - RARE
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, c. 1925, unknown maker. Amish babies were welcomed with quilts, usually made by their mothers or grandmothers. Today Amish crib or doll quilts are quite rare because they were put to hard use. This one was never used therefore it had to have been deliberately saved by the quilt maker. Pieced wools, good condition. 15" x 15".

Touching Stars with Sugar Cone Border, Dartt Settlement, PA, c. 1870. Unknown maker. Dartt Settlement, in the Mansfield/Wellsboro area of Tioga County, PA, was named for its first settler, J. M. Dartt, who settled there in 1811. Cotton, quilted 12 stitches per inch, excellent condition, 96" x 71". Crisp, wonderful quilt of the period with unique border treatment.

Tumbling Schoolhouses
Tumbling Schoolhouses, Ohio, c. 1860. I have never seen a Schoolhouse quilt set up this way. The Teddy Roosevelt (26th president, 1901-1909) embroidered face was probably done after the quilt was made as the dates do not match. This quilt would have gone with me to Japan when I curated the Schoolhouse Exhibition if I had had it then. Cotton, good condition, 78" x 63.5".

Lovely quilt of chintz, appliquéd & pieced, a great example of the period. Features a central star with appliqued stars surround & wide brown print border. By an unknown maker, Ohio, c. 1825-1840. Extraordinarily large: at the time it was made, beds often had trundles and were very tall. Excellent condition; 106" x 128."
