Tumbling Schoolhouses

Tumbling Schoolhouses, Ohio, c. 1860. I have never seen a Schoolhouse quilt set up this way. The Teddy Roosevelt (26th president, 1901-1909) embroidered face was probably done after the quilt was made as the dates do not match. This quilt would have gone with me to Japan when I curated the Schoolhouse Exhibition if I had had it then. Cotton, good condition, 78" x 63.5".

Album Original Design (Sampler)

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, c. 1860, unknown maker. Mostly pieced with some appliqué. This quilt is very hard to describe. It is in an album / sampler format, but the blocks resemble individual drawings. The maker created unusual and original designs for it. The quilt is from the collection of Sandra Mitchell and was purchased from her estate. Cottons, unwashed / unused condition, some stains. 74.5" x 91".
