Tumbling Schoolhouses Tumbling Schoolhouses, Ohio, c. 1860. I have never seen a Schoolhouse
quilt set up this way. The Teddy Roosevelt (26th president, 1901-1909)
embroidered face was probably done after the quilt was made as the
dates do not match. This quilt would have gone with me to Japan
when I curated the Schoolhouse Exhibition if I had had it then.
Cotton, good condition, 78" x 63.5". |

Album Original Design (Sampler) Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, c. 1860. This quilt is very hard
to describe. It is in an album / sampler format, but the blocks
resemble individual drawings. It was published in Quilt Digest 4,
1986, in the article written by the late Michael Kile about Sandra
Mitchell, one of the earliest dealers focusing on quilts. The Maker
has used most unusual and original patterns. It is mostly pieced
with some appliqué. The quilt is from the collection of the late
Sandra Mitchell, purchased by me from her estate at the time of
her death. Cottons, unwashed / unused condition, some stains, 74
½" x 91". |

Prince's Feather This quilt is a wonderful example of mid 19th century Pennsylvania quilts, and is very unique because of its uncommon size. The quilt has only 3 colors and a Prince's Feather pattern to achieve an amazing visual effect. The appliquéd feathers and the center star in solid red and deep forest green cotton are framed by red and green cotton triangles, on a white cotton ground. The quilt is hand quilted with 3/4" grid stitching throughout at an excellent 7-8 stitches per inch. It has a thin batting, a narrow red binding and a solid white cotton backing. Made c. 1860, this Lancaster, Pennsylvania beauty is in excellent unwashed, unused condition with a very few faint stain spots. Measuring 49.5" x 50.5" this quilt is a perfect size for wall hanging.
