Applique, from a kit, c. 1950. This is a perfect quilt for that special princess. I have not seen this kit quilt in more than 30 years of brokering fine quilts. From the estate of collector Hardin Pettit, Paducah, Ky. Cotton, excellent condition, 89" x 69".

Touching Stars with Sugar Cone Border, Dartt Settlement, PA, c. 1870. Unknown maker. Dartt Settlement, in the Mansfield/Wellsboro area of Tioga County, PA, was named for its first settler, J. M. Dartt, who settled there in 1811. Cotton, quilted 12 stitches per inch, excellent condition, 96" x 71". Crisp, wonderful quilt of the period with unique border treatment.

Touching Stars, Dartt Settlement, PA, c. 1870. Unknown maker. Dartt Settlement, in the Mansfield/Wellsboro area of Tioga County, PA, was named for its first settler, J. M. Dartt, who settled there in 1811. Cotton, unused condition, 83" x 69". Great use of mid 19th century fabrics to create this lively quilt.

Cactus Flower Baskets

Cactus Flower Baskets, Paducah, KY, c. 1870. Made by Nettie Lou Washington, a family slave of Henry Bonifield Hand. The Hand family first settled in Cape Girardeau, MO on a Spanish land grant in the 1700’s before moving to Smithland, KY. Mr. Hand was born in 1811 in Smithland, where he was the first court clerk, and settled in Paducah after the Civil War. He performed the first marriage ceremony in Calloway County and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. Cotton, gated in solid blue, unwashed, unused, a few fade marks, 90” X 76”.

Rose of Sharon with Swag Border, Elkton, Todd County, KY, c. 1920. Made by Gee Gee Owen, daughter of a Methodist circuit rider. The Owens moved to the Gage community, Ballard County, KY in 1904. Cotton, excellent quilting, excellent condition, 83” X 86”.
